Traveling 18 hours from Miami will bring you to El Calafate, located in southern Patagonia, Argentina. Prepare for a chilly welcome upon landing, as the cold weather is ever-present. This region of southern Patagonia is renowned for its abundance of giant rainbow trout and various other trout species. During my own journey, I ventured to the Jurassic Lake Lodge, where I dedicated 6.5 days to pursuing these magnificent creatures and even managed to set 7 World Records. It may surprise you, given my origins in Latvia where winter temperatures average below 27°F, but I’m not particularly fond of cold weather.
Once you’ve successfully caught a giant rainbow trout, your exposed hands quickly succumb to the freezing air, causing them to freeze almost instantly. So, you may wonder why I’m discussing freezing weather and what today’s tip entails. Well, there’s quite a bit you can do to ensure you remain warm and comfortable.
During my time in Patagonia, I learned a useful trick that I’d like to share with my fellow anglers. Here it is: make use of nitrile gloves. Why, you ask? By wearing nitrile gloves, you can dip your covered hand into frigid water and instantly dry them, allowing your hands to warm up much faster than if they were bare. With bare hands, they tend to become wet and damp, making it difficult to dry them promptly.
In conclusion, this simple trick ensures that you can fully enjoy your fishing expedition without being hindered by the freezing temperatures. So, remember to pack your nitrile gloves so you can fully enjoy the Fly Fishing experience in frigid weather.
